That is correct and you get cash, the intrinsic
value of the option. Usually only deep in the money options are exercised
early. They settle at cash value of the index so you would lose the time
premium in the option if you exercised an option that had time premium.

option.It can be exercised any time prior to
expiration.So, in theory, if I wanted to exercise a
put option, I would write (?) to the CBOE and they would have to sell one
