I was skeptical at first but, with
a little research, I found out that the e-mail does have some benefit.
First, the main claim of the e-mail is not true. Credit bureaus will not
give out personal information to ANYONE who asks.
They will continue to give it out to businesses that have a legimate concern
about your credit history and viability. If you call the phone number
(888-567-8688), which is legitimate, you should then hit Option
#1 (which the e-mail tells you NOT to do. It tells you not to do it
because that option points out the erroneous portions of the
e-mail). Following the instructions will allow you to remove yourself from
lists of pre-approved credit card offers, and similar mailings. You can do
it for a 2 year period, or permanently. The ability to do this, and the
phone number itself have been around for several years now. So it is
nothing new. After you give your information, which is secure, you
will get paperwork in the mail a week or so later that has to be filled out,
with your signature, before the request can become official.
