If you had just received the most public firing in recent history, you might
be a little rattled and not up for memorizing a 20 minute speech also. As
for McNealy, I've been to more than a few keynotes at technical conventions
and the presenters almost always have a prompter somewhere in the
auditorium. Sometimes they are on the back wall. Sometimes that are on the
ledge at the front of the balcony. I know I couldn't memorize a 20 minute
speech on my best day, much less deliver it to an audience of 2000 without
sweating myself into a coma. But I can write an Excel application in VBA to
optimize forward-feed networks with genetic algorithms. So am I an idiot,
idiot savant, or just not a public speaker?

The skills required to survive in politics are not the same skills required
to survive in the real world. Harv was not a politician. That's not a bad
thing. I have more respect for Harvey Pitt than I have for Trent Lott who
is a consumate politician. It's my understanding that Harv left (and
presumably will be returning to) a very lucrative law practice to head the
SEC. So clearly he's not the dullest knife in the drawer either.

Harvey Pitt's outgoing speech totally confirms my assertion that Harvey was
not the "sharpest tool in the shed"...
Why ? He had to READ every word of his speech.

In contrast to another speaker I witnessed: Scott McNealy of Sun Micro
talked for 2 hours - no notes, no reading, much more complex subject as
well.
