SP3 for Win 2000 includes software that periodically scans your computer and relays information about installed software, drivers and some hardware to Microsoft.  This is part of their "auto-update" feature, designed to download new updates in the backround while you work in the foreground.

If you prefer to disable this auto-update feature on Win 2000, install patches yourself and keep MS from automatically snooping through your hard drive, read this article from The Register ...
