Hi Jim,
In the pattern, a swing-high is defined as a high with a lower high
on either side. A swing-low is defined as a low with a higher low
on either side. This is a classic and the simplest definition of
swing-highs and lows.
New highs in an upward trend and new lows in a downward trend are
subject to the rules of chaos in that their volatility makes them
less valid as the "simplest" point of defining trend.
Thus, classical swing-lows in an upward trend and classical swing-highs
in a downward trend represent the simplest form of the trend.
