I am willing to be corrected but I think my original statement is correct.
Without the preview pane you can only see the title of the email message and
sender. You can right click on it and delete it without opening it The
preview pane shows you the content, therefore the email is already 'open'.
After seeing your posting I did a search and found a link to this article in
