As I read your post, and consider the *intent*, I would view it a bit
differently. If I were to rephrase your apparent intent, it would be:
If you don't like it, then leave.
There is NO need to remind a seasoned subscriber of his option to
leave, is there? If not, why write your note?

I don't think it was totally neutral at all. Why? You did not address
any of the content of his message. There was no discussion, just an
apparent message as stated above.
If you disagreed with him, it would have been much more polite, IMHO,
to state what your differing views were, directly and with no implied
or hidden content.
Ugly, offensive messages can be delivered in 'polite' language, too.
It's the *intent* that counts, NOT the language.
