I agree. :-) But I would suggest that the moderator frequently step in
to remind people of some basic email preferred practices. It would
seem that there are many email 'newbies' on this list, judging, in
part, by the frequent viruses that are circulated here.
Another that needs considerable reminding is the need to *trim posts*.
In a long discussion, there are sometimes 20-30 old posts dangling
from the end of an otherwise short reply. Do we really need such huge
appendages?

Again I have to agree. Mark is one of the most useful posters on the
list. Unfortunately, his style is extremely abrasive, and most people
can't see the good part. Perhaps it is only the people who already
know what he is trying to say that even recognize it. :-)

It would seem that it is OK on this list to use polite language and
still show disrespect for the poster - just pay attention to the
*intent* of the post. There are quite often rather cutting snide
remarks that are given ever-so-politely, but the intent is clear. I
submit that this is just as disrespectful as a blunt attack.

It may have to do with how people on this list think. I seem to detect
a strong bias against quantitative methods, and an open-arms reception
to mystical methods. There is *very* little hard-nosed quantitative
discussion on this list, and most of the 'quants' are gone, some by
being banned. It seems that this attitude is desired by the members,
and is not likely to change.
Lists generally have agendas that are NOT spelled out in the
description, and it is these hidden agendas that seem to cause many
problems.
KR> I would like Mark Brown to be reinstated.
Never gonna happen, on this list.
KR> I would like professionalism to be paramount. Professionalism
KR> does not mean politeness.
Maybe. I believe it is important to distinguish between a challenge
and an attack. If someone posts 'predictions', I think it is perfectly
proper for people to ask for some *significant* proof that this is not
some off-the-wall junk. Sort of what Mark B does - "here's an idea,
and here are the numbers to back it up."
It is possible, but difficult for many, to enter into such a
discussion without resorting to attacks. Keep it on the 'challenge'
level, always. Again, the moderator can hop in and straighten this out
in real time.
In the past, such challenges have started storms of criticism, even if
done 'politely', with some being banned. It is not clear that this
would change on this list.

They both have their place, and offer ideas to quite different sets of
people. But, if I had to choose... naahh... you already know who I'd
choose. :-)
