Another two cents:
A cable/DSL router/switch works very well with sharing connections to
multiple computers. It can also be configured as a DHCP server (so
you don't need server software, keep using peer-to-peer and the only
IP address the outside cable connection sees is the router's. For a
software firewall, the freeware program Zone Alarm is rated as highly
as almost all retail firewalls.
A Linksys router/4 port switch runs about $100 now, and Zone Alarm is
free.
