Subject: [RT] Oil! Could we end the need for imported oil?
I have had a hobby of trying to cut energy use, and have studied the subject
for years. I believe that if all crude oil were to suddenly stop coming up
from wells, that within 6 months for most things and 5 years for some other
things, methods could be found to eliminate the need for oil. Here is a
short list of some of the things that could be done that are already proven
in implementation or concept. This again is a short list, there are many
other things like gasohol, fuel cells, etc.
Sure a little oil will always be needed for lubrication and for fuel in some
extreme circumstances but that is a drop in the sea compared to what oil is
now used.
1. Put a tax on ordinary light bulbs of 2 to 4 dollars and use the tax money
to make buying energy efficient fluorescents about the same as the price of
the ordinary light bulbs with the tax.
2. Encourage the use of natural lighting.
3. Encourage the use of LCD monitors and televisions.
4. Build high efficiency cooling plants that can be 400 times as efficient
as ordinary refrigeration, and distribute the coolant through pipes to homes
for air conditioning and refrigeration.
5. In places where it is infeasible to run coolant install cooling systems
that come on at night and freeze a large amount of material, like blue ice,
then during the day air is cooled by the circulating it around the material.
High efficiency refrigerators that can run off of a single solar panel
should be encouraged where feasible. Kitchens can be designed to use more
solar power for cooking in some areas. Toasters can be made to run on gas.
6. Use small efficient gas Cat heaters in individual rooms for heat instead
of whole house systems.
7. Use LCD night lights.
8. In cold northern areas use bio mass heating, with fuel backups systems in
ultra efficient buildings.
9. Maximize hydro electric power generation. Improve dredging techniques so
that water flow can be maximized and maintained.
10. Develop vehicles that run on compressed air and or electrical cables
that can be buried in the freeways. Air can be compressed using solar panels
running an air compressor in your home and stored for use tomorrow in your
vehicle while you drive it today.
11. Develop aircraft that are launched via linear accelerators and fly on
non oil based fuels.
12. Develop vacuum pipes for sending freight between cities.
13. Plastic and glass, and metal containers can be reused just like the old
days.
