Pakistan had a pretty clear choice ... disassociate from the Taliban or
else. OOH, the UK could have sat back with the rest of Europe but did not.
This so-called "broad coalition" looks like a disaster wrapped in lip
service ... I expect it will unravel real quickly when the going gets tough.
This is going to be a long and tough process and quite likely not very
pleasant. Consider that the war on terrorism does nothing to decrease US
dependence on Arab oil nor will it relieve the US of the continued support
of Israel. Even the most US-friendly of Muslims will tell you that these are
enduring problems which engender sympathy for action among the billion +-
Muslims world-wide. I expect that Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and other
US-friendly Arab states are going to undergo considerable upheaval before
this is all over. Further, it is difficult to see how a couple of million
Israeli's are going to survive in the midst of an increasingly hostile
Arabia without resorting to nuking the whole area.
While the major terrorist groups can likely be whittled down, the war on
terrorism lacks an essential ingredient ... a plan to exit the region
entirely and drastically reduce reliance on fossil fuel.
