There was no New York when Nostie wrote that. But there was a "New City".
Naples, which was a powerful city - state got its name from the Greek
Neopolis which means New City. Mt. Vesuvius is just down the road and
occasionally provides some fireworks. If you see Vesuvius blow, run for
Rome.
