This shows why it is so important to
not just test the indiviual parts of a system, but how they will work
together.
Some need to read "Synergetics" by R. Buckminster Fuller.
When I was in my teens, for fun I tested many of his (natures) structures to
determine their strength to weight ratio using toothpicks.
The toothpicks alone had exceeding poor structural integrity, but formed into
the proper geometric structure, their strength to weight ratio was in the
thousands. In fact, my glue joints failed, not the tooth picks.
The one structure that comes to mind is the Icosahedron. If memory serves, I
only used a couple dozen toothpicks (minimal weight and mass) to create the
structure, yet I was able to get it to support over 30 lbs.
5? grams of toothpicks to support over 30 lbs. Strength to weight ratio of 5
to 13440 = 2688
And that ratio is nothing. The Icosahedron is spherical in shape using
squares and triangles. If I used a simple octet truss ((a couple tetrahedrons
(which require 4 toothpicks) properly oriented)) which would require little
more than than half a dozen I think, toothpicks, not doubt that ratio would
sky rocket into the tens of thousands.
The strength of symetry, (Ira's many indicators combined) that's my long
winded point.
