the two you mentioned, and most other "houses", don't make much, if any,
of their money trading the market(s) by taking outright positions and
anticipating a move. there is always an angle: they may have a big
customer order they are working, or know something in the currency market,
or be working off primary dealer info in the debt markets, or "making" a
market, just like the las vegas dealers - lol.
the idea that bob rubin is/was a great trader, in the sense that most of
us use that word, is pure BS. when you have big bank orders in the
currency markets it is as easy as sunday morning.
