The simplest way is with the "Paint program" that comes with windows

START - PROGRAMS- ACCESSORIES-PAINT

BMP are usually significantly larger than gif or jpg images. I actually use
a freeware program Irfanview which allows you to open and convert many types
of graphic format, manipulate images, add text etc and also is very good for
screenshots. Screenshots can be emailed directly from within the program. An
additional benefit - no annoying "shareware" messages on your screenshots.
