In our shop (and it is a small one) we
typically have about
15 to 20 gb in a data set which requires
backup for archive
purposes.  We have a total of almost
200gb on the network
that also dictates a full backup
sometimes.

We have everything from CD burners, to
Optical Disk (remember
them) to 4mm to 8mm to 3480's and a
DLT.

THE ONLY THING TO USE FOR SUCH BACKUPS AS
THIS IS DLT.  The
price is coming down where use of it is not
prohibitive any
more.

Next best is 8mm but that is damn
slow.  We use a special
program (TapeDisk) that really creates an
image of our
files on 8mm tape and can be
accessed/updated just like
a hard disk but slowly.

If you are looking at 20gb or less then
today the hard disk
is a much better idea although you really
need a couple or
three of them and cycle them in the same
way you would
backup tapes.

Using CD's is OK if you don't back up much data but do you
realize how longit would take and how many CD's it would take to back up
15 Gigs of data?Much better to use a hard drive considering how cheap they
  are.Regards, RandallTo
