An oversimplified analogy ... having a person to person conversation
(resident executable) versus same conversation through an interpreter
(browser based html, Java, etc. interpreter). Further, browser based
routines tend to require more interactive data downloading from the host
than do resident applications which tend to store required data locally.
These are broad generalizations which may not always hold true.
