Many technicians consider VLA (Value Line Arithmetic Index) to be the
best measure of the "broad market" because it isn't cap weighted and
doesn't get dominated by a few big caps. I think the gif speaks for
itself.
As an aside, the terms bull and bear market aren't too relevant to me.
If you are nimble and choose your trades carefully, you can make money
shorting in a bull market or buying in a bear market. All I care about
is should I be long, short or flat this particular security right now.
The macro economic picture can take care of itself. It's really hard to
make money solely based on macro economic opinions or a personal "glass
is half-full/half-empty" view of the world or life in general.
