[RT] Re: Multiple Monitors

Here are some of the things I ran into in adding a second monitor:

1. Determine if your motherboard has an AGP slot or integrated video, i.e.
video chip on the motherboard and connector on the rear edge.
2. If it has an AGP(accelerated graphics port) slot then you can buy a
multiple monitor AGP video card. Matrox has been popular. Also older
series of Matrox handle more than two monitors. http://www.matrox.com
3. If it does NOT have an AGP slot then you will need to buy a PCI video
card.
4. Instructions come with the video card on how to install it, plus the
vendor tech support will help.
5. There are some BIOS settings for primary and secondary monitors that
might need to be fiddled with to get the desired startup results.
6. Control panel settings can be used to select the desktop orientation of
monitor one and two so when you move the mouse across the desktop it slides
across the boundary between the two monitors.

My PII 400 had integrated video and no AGP slot, so I had to use a PCI card.
Expandability should be a consideration when buying a computer and an AGP
slot is preferential depending on the plans for the computer.

Your P3 500 has PCI bus mastering so IRQ's should not be a problem if auto
IRQ assignment, is enabled in the BIOS. Such a feature uses PCI steering
and has one IRQ for PCI cards. Using integrated video and a PCI video card
offers a bit of a challenge for selection of primary and seconday monitors
and which one is the "bootable" one.
