My ISP has an idle disconnect of 10m and a session disconnect of 6h. You can
have your email program check for mail every 8m, and that will keep the
connection alive til the session time out. I anticipate that, have an alarm
that pops up and reminds me to disconnect and reconnect during the martini
hour. You can also get a keep alive utility. Some ISPs scan for them and can
disconnect you if they suspect your computer is unattended. There may be a
statement to this effect in your online agreement. ZoneAlarm will keep your
ISP from seeing your computer when they ping it. Mine finally gave up.

Subject: [RT] Gen: inernet based data via isp's
| Traders,
|
| i have a question: when receiving internet based mkt. data (pcquote,
qfeed,
| esignal, etc) thru a basic isp are there typicaly problems with with the
| isp's modems wanting to log you off due to inacivity? what about being
| online for 8 hours at a stretch?
|
| I am just trying to get an idea of what to expect from using a local isp
to
| access internet based mkt data and the ramifications of being online all
| day. i dont want to have to do some "thing" every 15 or 20 mins just to
keep
| my connection alive.
|
| my plan is to use metastock 6.52 with dynastore, which is a utilitiy that
| mimics a signal feed using q-feed as the data vendor. i am not sure if
the
| data coming thru this configuration will be recognized by an isp's modems
in
| a way that will keep the connection "alive".
|
| i am currently using aol to access the internet, which is not likely to be
a
| good choice through wich to obtain live mkt data.
|
| any input is appreciated.
|
| thanks,
|
| krm
