I organized my NT networking protocols as GRC instructed, and sure enough, all my ports are now closed to control by outside computers. I then installed ZoneAlarm, version 2.0.26 (do not get any earlier version). It is very stable and works like a charm. Now all my networking ports are *invisible* to the outside world, as well as closed.

It's instructive to surf the web with zonealarm (or almost any other firewall) and watch how invasive some web sites are. One site tried to access both my FTP and IDENT ports. Luckily, ZoneAlarm blocks their attempts and posts messages letting me know each time what was just attempted. I really pity anyone using cable modem and not doing all that GRC recommends. The simple recommendation by cable modem companies to disable file and printer sharing is just not enough. Smart hackers can get around that.

You also need security from the inside out. Email can have virus infected attachments designed to attack from within. So get the best anti-virus software. Warning -- McAfee is not as good as it use to be. Someone sent me an infected DOC file and my Dr. Solomon AV software caught it. When I informed the sender, he downloaded the latest version of McAfee and it claimed to have found and disinfected the all problem files. However, when he created a new DOC, it too was infected. When he ran the Dr. Solomon Toolkit, it found and disinfeced over 200 *additional* infected files McAfee failed to spot. Only then was he able to send clean DOC files.

Dr. Solomon will soon be discontinued. PC World now rates Symantec AV software the best.
