The usage of the island book depends highly on the type of
trading you plan on doing. When I was trading stocks on level 2, the
island book was helpful to know who is in the market. Now days a lot of
the level 2 entry order brokers have the island book incorporated on their quote
system. One way I can think of using the L2 for longer term traders is to
view it at time of entry to see how strong or weak the market is. Again
usually this is just a real short term indicator as even though the market looks
like it has support at the current time, 5 mins from now it may be totally
different.

The only use I make of the Island book is to see what stocks are trading
in volume via their top 20 list, or the After hours top 20 list, in pre
and post market hours. If there is a stock I like to trade near the top
of the list, I may participate. Otherwise I find it useless.
