The great increase in speed and continuous 24/7 connection made the
choice a no brainer for me. It makes using the web more like reading a
newspaper; you don't hesitate to flip from one page to another just to
check it out. With 56k I would always think about how long it would
take for a site to load and many times not elect to going there. I
don't bother to read a lot of details on line but rather print what I
might be interested in to an HP 4000 17 ppm printer. I can then scan or
read off-line much more conveniently and file what's worth keeping and
pitch the rest.
I've been on Cox@xxxx cable modem for several years here in the Phoenix,
AZ area and would not even consider going back to 56k. Speeds vary all
over the place mainly due to web traffic and server speeds at the other
end. Its the fastest service available right now except for possibly
SpeedChoice, http://www.speedchoice.com/main.html which is a two way
microwave system here in Phoenix and also Detroit, MI. I've been on
their waiting list to check them out for several months now. They are
busy upgrading existing customers from telephone to microwave uplink.
Negatives are cost per month which is about $30.00 if you buy the cable
modem (cost me $450.00 almost three years ago), or $45.00 if you don't
buy it. Also there have been some down times due mainly to Cox Cable
growing pains but most of that seems to have been taken care of. They
have also limited upload speed to 33k or so to discourage the use of web
servers on Cox@xxxxx This could be a consideration if you regularly
upload large files such as graphics or software. Technical help is very
good once you get past the typical 15-30 minute hold time.
Hope this helps. Ken
