Scott,
A cable modem is a shared internet connection. You get a slice of the
available bandwidth and therefore your overall performance via cable modem
will vary inversely with the number of active users on your 'street' if you
will. It should always beat a 56k modem hands down. You would need about 200
simultaneous heavy users on the same leg (street) to bring your bandwidth to
the level of a 56k modem. This is the main difference between DSL and a
cable modem is with DSL you pay for a guaranteed minimum bandwidth which is
usually slower than the maximum bandwidth of the cable modem. All in all
you will probably like it. Be sure to check your computer for security
concerns. You should make sure none of your drives or printers are shared.
After you are set up check out the web site: http://grc.com/default.htm
Then
click on Shields Up. It will do a step by step security check. You can also
purchase a hardware firewall for about $400 if you have a local network at
your home. These devices will also allow all computers on your network to
share the cable connection securely. Good luck.
