The size of GIF's depend upon the color reduction and screen resolution. On
my system running 1024x768 x 16 million cars (24 bit true color), a full
screen image for one monitor will run over 2 meg. The maximum color
resolution for GIF images is 256 color and the automatic reduction attendant
with conversion to GIF format will reduce that 2 meg to around 65k. Lower
resolution screens e.g. 800x600 will yield smaller size while higher
resolutions will yield larger size. Some capture software will permit
reduction to 16 colors which will generally reduce the GIF by another 20% or
so.

There are some other formats such as JPEG and PNG which can yield sizes not
much larger than GIF, providing the color reduction is set to 256 or 16
color. 16 color is more than adequate for charts.
