I have no truck with AOL either, but I predicted their demise many years ago
when I was a long time CompuServe member and AOL was a startup. Those of us
who used the Cs forums heavily and had automated navigators to collect
messages and track threads joked constantly about the lousy software,
constant advertising messages, and bombardment of free floppies. Not only
did AOL survive but they ended up buying out a crippled Cs (of course stupid
Cs management had a lot to do with that). Turns out AOL has always known
that it is in the business of marketing eyeballs, not communications
service. They'll never market my eyeballs (nor will they get my investment
$), but that does not mean that they won't be around for some time to come.
