Actually, to elaborate a bit further, I don't like anything about MOT.
The bulls in this stock point out the great earnings increase posted this
week but that is only great if you consider it is just coming back from
near break even results. (.02)
This company is in three main areas of business.
1. Solid state electronics. ie: chips, modules, transistors, etc.
The competition in this arena is heavy and profits are low. Motorola has
no significant propriatory components with which to hold profitability up.
2. Cellular Phones
As everyone who follows the company knows, they got behind in digital
cellular technology and have been playing catch up. A bad role for the
"leader in wireless communications" to be in. These products are basically
give aways for the carriers and again, competition is strong from many
points of the world.
3. Two-way radio communications
Motorola has always been the leader in the field, world wide. The problem
for the immediate future will be cellular companies who have paid for their
infrastructure and are now beginning to offer businesses free calls between
cell phones assigned to the same company. This will cut directly into
Motorola's sales of conventional and trunked radio products. An 800-900
mhz trunked radio can make phone calls and talk between units but a mobile
unit costs circa $500 while the cell phone is free with the service.
The Galvin family owns a huge chunk of stock and a Galvin has run the
company since its inception. I am not impressed with the current Galvin,
(Chris), running the firm. The Iridium project is not the only boner he
has come up with.
Why has the stock run up so strong of recent? Because in my opinion, no
analyst understands this company. There are people looking at it from the
view that it is an eletronics parts supplier, a cell phone manufacturer and
a two-way radio/paging company but I never see anyone talking about MOT as
all of these things with a good over-sight into those business areas.
The stock is up 4 1/2 right now with a PE of 118+ .. I'm going to get
short this stock at the first good opportunity.
Sorry for getting so long winded .. The above are my opinions and my
experiences with the company but are not a suggestion for a trade.
