It it coincidental you should mention the LME. When I last visited the
LME, back in the 80s,
I stood in the visitors gallery and watch the trading below. I also noticed
that there was a sign
prohibiting taking any photos and and large sign which listed the symbols the
traders used when
recording their trades. The market symbols looked surprisingly familiar to me
as they used the
old Alchemist symbols for metals which were derived from Astrology. So, if you
are a LME Silver
trader rather than writing out that you bot or sold Silver you would draw a
crescent which is the
glyph for the Moon, the ancient planetary ruler for Silver. The glyph that you
may know as
the female symbol, a circle with a cross on the bottom, is the glyph for
Venus. Venus is the ancient
ruler of Copper. The LME had the Venus glyph as its symbol for Copper. Mars
looks like the male symbol, a circle with a pointy thing pointing at a 45
degree angle up and to the right <G>. Mars is the ancient ruler for Iron and
of course this was their symbol for Iron. Saturn, which looks like a Sickle or
a "5" with its 'hat' pulled down over its ears, is the symbol and ruler of
Lead. I vaguely recall that they had Jupiter, a curvy "4" as the symbol for
Tin. The Sun, a circle with a dot in the middle, is Gold. The Sun is the
ancient ruler of Gold.
By the way, as for the "Absolutely No Cameras" rule, when no one was
looking I broke the rules
and took pictures of the big sign which told which planetary symbol went with
which metal. So, I have
proof that the LME uses planetary symbols for most of their metals. I must
admit that there was one or two symbols with which I wasn't familiar. Anyway,
I found it interesting that not only did they assign planetary glyphs as
symbols for the metals, they assigned the proper ones based on ancient
Astrological rules.

Metallurgically,
