Richard: when you get the good trend indicator, let me know.  I'm of the 
opinion that alot of the traditional trend indicators are lagging.... that 
they wait until a trend is in place, then tell you it's there.  I approach it 
a little differently.... in fact very similar to an earlier post from 
someone....                                                                   
        

The ABSENCE of a trend is alot easier to detect... so I look for situations 
with flat move indexes and low volatility ( i like the DRV indicator by 
Barnes for this, and a simple volatility indicator which is merely the 
average bar range of a reasonable length - say 10 or 20 bars, it's robust so 
doesn't really matter).  By definition, when the market moves OUT of this 
congested condition, a TREND of some length is developing.... I then use a 
variety of indicators to measure the on-going strength of the trend and look 
to tighten stops when the strength weakens.
