Virus programs are an after-the-fact solution. Prevention works just fine.
Don't download stuff from unknown web pages, minimize use of shareware and
other widely distributed "goodies" of uncertain origin, discard all email
attachments not of type gif/jpg unless the content and source of content is
known in advance to be reliable. As an example of the later, I have a good
friend who constantly forwards humor he gathers from the net - if it's text
I read it, if it's an attachment I hit <delete>.
