Food has historically been the ultimate strategic industry. The primary
driver for the improvements in transportation for the 100 years from
1850 to 1950 were to improve the ability to distrbute food from farmers
(cattlemen, etc.) to consumers.

In order to limit the dependence on imported food, many countries
protect those food sectors considered important. This is becoming an
important issue in Europe, where DeGaulle negotiated a ro-agriculture
systen that meant a huge transfer from the rest of Europe (mainly
Germany, but the addition of the UK was already under consideration) to
France.

The US protects its farmers like everyone else. But that doesn't make it
right.

If you want really shameful subsidising, look at sugar, which isn't even
a vital foodstuff.
