Ge,
I use Level II. I traded both at home and at an office. When I was at a Level
II firms office the trades were very fast. Like milli seconds ( seemed like).
Now I trade at home and depending on which market I trade and stock I trade, my
fills are about 2.5 seconds for NASDAQ and 30-45 seconds NYSE ( which feels
like a lifetime). On NASDAQ stocks like Dell,AMAT,INTC, etc your fills should
be 2.5 seconds if you place your order to buy at the ask. If you are trading
penny stocks (single digit) your fills may take a little longer like 5-10
seconds, the only reason I have is MM(market Makers) like to play a lot more
games with single digit stocks.
If I sell short a stock on NYSE my wait time is more like 1-1.5 min. Call your
Level II data provider
and ask to do a ping test. While connected to the internet you will goto your
DOS promt and type in a series of numbers( they will give you). If your
connection is 285 milliseconds or longer then its to slow.
Check to make sure your telephone jack and modem have a very short line, (like
2-3 feet, not 20 with a bunch of connectors). Then there is another ping test
you can do to see how many times(nodes/satelites) it takes for your signal to
reach your level II provider. If its like 20 or less that should be good. If
more like 50+, change your ISP (internet service provider).
I use a regular phone line with 56k modem. Another quick way to check to see
if its your ISP or Level II, during the trading day if it seems slow, jump to
the internet, then type in a page that requires JAVA, like cnn.fn and if it
takes forever then its your ISP not your Level II. Also make sure you are
useing plenty of RAM or SDRAM, like 64+ meg.
Call your Level II tech support, they can help you pinpoint the problem within
a matter of 15mins. If you still have problems go with the cable modem.
Hope this helps,
Joe Frabosilio
