To those of you who trade listed equity options ... a
price war has started between the four option exchanges.
The competition is the first response to the advancement of
electronic trading. Essentially for retail order, depending
on exchange, the exchanges fees have either been reduced to
as low as zero at a couple of the exchanges .... to as high
as about 1/3 of what they were(the exception is options
under a $1 premium)prior to the fee cuts. Recognize that
exchange fees are only a portion of the total cost, but none
the less if you use a firm with it's own operation on an
option exchange trading floor(Schwab, Fidelity, Dean Witter,
Merrill, DLJ ... to name a few)their costs are down. If you
use a firm that doesn't have a direct exchange operation..
what we call correspondent firms...they buy execution
services under contract from someone with an operation on
the trading floor( E Trade, Ameritrade, Brown and most of
the regional brokerage firms)and they may not be getting the
fee reductions passed thru yet. If you are an active trader
you might want to check with your broker and renegotiate
your deal where appropriate.
Just as an example the AMEX now eliminates exchange fees on
all electronically eligible orders of 30 contracts or less.
This would be a saving, to your broker of $.35 per contract
if they have their own operation on the trading floor.
