Most central banks in Europe are owned by the governments of those
countries. The same is true of the Bundesbank, which maintains strong
independence from the vagaries of politics, although a majority of the
people in charge are political appointees. The terms are so long, and
the national desire to avoid the hyperinflationof 1923, that the extent
of political influence has bben small.
