I suspect that this misses the real dynamics. As seen by many here, Clinton
has built a long record of refitting facts to suit his purpose, purposely
misleading the public, using and discarding friends and allies, and abusing
his powers. The litany is long from not inhaling and lying to avoid the
draft, through rounding up some 900 FBI files on political enemies, to not
having sex with that woman. This is an exceptionally smart and gifted man
and a lawyer to boot. Until the ML matter, he had managed to handle things
in a manner which kept him out of trouble, avoided accountability, and fed
his arrogance. This time he screwed up badly and his political enemies have
seized upon this as an opportunity to hold his feet to the fire. Without the
prior history, the ML matter would have generated no more real fire than
some of Gingrich's stunts (such as taking a $2 million advance from Murdoch)
. This is not about ML, this is about arrogance and accountability and
settling several decades of scores. It's not terribly different from the
petty criminal who is finally put away for life, not for any single crime,
but for the cumulative record.
