First of all, you might want to see what's filling it up. Several
applications are rather liberal with what they put in there; virus
checkers and Dr. Watson both are good for this.
But, having said that, go into the event viewer
(Start|Programs|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer). Select the
"Application Log" (File menu). Select "Log Settings..." (File menu),
and change the maximum size if needed. Then, for "automated" cleanup,
either select "Overwrite Events As Needed" or "Overwrite Events older
than ___ days".
Keep in mind, if you're interested in such things, you'll have to check
the logs periodically or events might get overwritten without you having
seen them.
As a practical matter, I've probably checked my event log half a dozen
times in the last 3 years, and then only when I had need to; (the system
was dying for some reason or whathaveyou).
