Money Management: fastest way to increase your stake given a 51% edge

Some time ago while reading a book on horse race handicapping (the Dr.Z
system)
I came across the Kelly formula, the method wherein one can increase their
stake in the safest possible manner given a 51% edge.
If I recall correctly, you begin with a one unit bet if you win let the 2
units ride.  If you lose start again with one unit.  When you win with the 2
unit bet go back to one unit again.

This money management system might be valuable for commodity traders, it has
helped my trading.
