INVESTOR SENTIMENT SURVEY
9 / 20 / 98
------------------------------------------------
Below are the results of our weekly "Guess the Dow" sentiment survey. The
survey was taken from 9/14 through 9/20 on our web site.
Number of participants: 503
30 day outlook:
22% bullish, 17% last week
59% bearish, 65% last week
19% neutral, 19% last week
(percentages may not sum to 100 due to rounding)
Median guess for the DJIA closing value on Friday, 9/25: 7778 (it was 7591
last week). More complete sentiment data is available at
<http://www.lowrisk.com/sentiment.htm> .
Sentiment this week is still very bearish, though a bit less so than last
week. Bullish sentiment picked up 5% to 22%, while bearish sentiment
dropped 6% to 59%. This is one of those weeks when it is difficult to read
much into the sentiment readings. Sentiment grew slightly less bearish
(from extreme bearish readings) in a week where the DJIA was up 101 points.
One thing of note is the 5 week moving average of bearish sentiment is now
60%. This is an all time record for ANY 5 week moving average reading,
bullish or bearish.
