Brent:
The last Quebec referendum was a real close shave, the Yes (for separation)
side losing by just about 50,000 votes out of about ~3-4 million despite
suspiciously large numbers of ballots declared "invalid" in heavily Anglo
ridings and other irregularities. The whole process was condemned by the UN
like some 3rd world pseudo-democracy! That's nationalist politics, anything
goes! It looks like Quebec will separate the next time, but they have to
hold another election before they can have another referendum, and that
will be the real fight since former Federal Conservative party leader Jean
Charest has taken over the Quebec provincial Liberal party leadership and
he's well respected and liked in Quebec, so he might win. Don't worry about
it until you hear that the Parti Quebecois wins the next election which
should be called fairly soon. If the PQ wins, it looks real bad for Canada
and the Cnd$. Could be a big downward move if it even looks like a PQ
victory, or a big upward move if the Liberals win, so it should be worth
monitoring from a trading standpoint.

Otherwise, it's one big, sad mess.

John Stevenson
