Hi David,
I'm not sure we are thinking the same thing, when we say "zero sum"
to me this has no negative connotations. it is just a theory that
states "for every winner there will be a loser." It does not stipulate
who those parties might be. Please believe, that were I to discover
that you had been on the other end of a trade I lost, I would be the
first to congratulate you. There is no shame or blame on either side.
