Chris:

I use Windows 95.

I finally got this licked. I can see the Java index chart. Really, it's
simply a matter of my computer hardware being too slow (Pentium 66).
Still, I find that any 16-bit program will run relatively rapidly.

I dowloaded the Microsoft Explorer 3 for Windows 3.11 (16-bit), which
comes with the Java Virtual Machine for reading all Java applets.

It was successful, and the program actually runs faster than 16-bit
Netscape 3. As I suspected, the Netscape version (3 anyway) simply does
not handle all applets.

Explorer 3 is a little more bare-boned, but fast- this was when
Microsoft really made an effort to increase internet downloading speed.
Version 4 of either program would be too big and slow for my computer,
although I notice they did make a 16-bit version of both (4).

Problem solved-
