Below are the results of our weekly "Guess the Dow" sentiment survey. The
survey was taken from 1/25 through 2/1 on our web site.
Number of participants: 363
30 day outlook:
37% bullish, 41% last week
23% bearish, 29% last week
40% neutral, 29% last week
(percentages may not sum to 100 due to rounding)
Median guess for the DJIA closing value on Friday, 1/23: 7937 (it was
7801 last week). More complete sentiment data is available at
<http://www.lowrisk.com/sentiment.htm> .
Bullish sentiment dropped 4% to 37%, while bearish sentiment dropped to 23%
from 29%. That means the big winner this week was the neutral camp, which
jumped 11% to 40%. That is the highest neutral reading we have had since we
started Guess the Dow in May, 1997. Presumably, this is due to all the
uncertainty involved in the daily headlines last week. Despite the
headlines, the market turned in a strong performance last week, so we would
have expected a somewhat stronger showing from the bulls.
