Assuming that you die, and the broker closes your trades and you were
not operating under a trust, what then happens to the funds?

Well here is one possibility of what could happen to your funds. A short
while ago some princpals of a very "large" brokerage firm here in New
York were charged with using the funds of among other things inactive
accounts (ie: deceased clients) for their own interests.
