US OPTIONS FOCUS/Trading mixed ahead of earnings
CHICAGO, July 10 (Reuter) - Trading in individual equity options was mixed,
with investors largely sidelined ahead of the
onslaught of second quarter earnings, traders said Thursday.
``We were kind of busy at the beginning but things just died,'' one trader at
a U.S. brokerage firm said. ``I guess people are
waiting for earnings.''
He said most orders were blocks of less than 100 options.
The head of another brokerage's options department said his options trading
desk was relatively quiet also.
Technology stock options were the feature, led by such names as 3Com Corp
(COMS), Intel Corp (INTC) and Gateway 2000
Inc (GTW).
On the Pacific Exchange, the 3Com July 50 and 55 calls and August 55 calls
were fairly active as the stock rose 13/16 to
53-7/16 in heavy trading.
The stock rose sharply on Wednesday.
Also on the PCX, options on Compaq Computer Corp (CPQ) shares remained busy,
led by the July 120 calls, which traded
more than 3,400 contracts.
Compaq shares fell 1-1/4 to 119-3/4 after the computer maker reported second
quarter earnings of $1.48 a share, better than
analysts' consensus forecast of $1.39 but below some so-called ``whisper''
numbers, or unpublished estimates circulating on
Wall Street.
At the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), perennial favorite Intel was active,
particularly in the out-of-the-money July calls.
Intel shares fell 2-7/8 to 149-3/4 after a Salomon Brothers analyst said she
was concerned the company's second quarter
earnings may fall short of expectations.
The Intel July 150 call traded 5,645 contracts, the July 155 call traded
nearly 4,000 and the July 160 call traded about 2,600.
Among Intel puts, the July 150 was most active with turnover of more than
3,400 contracts. The July 145 put traded 2,800.
Elsewhere, a couple of Gateway 2000 options were active at the Chicago Board
Options Exchange (CBOE) in what a market
maker said was a reverse conversion.
The Gateway August 40 put traded 7,030 contracts and the August 40 call
traded 6,685.
