A few years back, based on recommendations from this list, I switched
from Norton Antivirus to AVG Free. Norton had turned into bloatware and
was really slowing down my system. Since then AVG has become more and
more intrusive, to the point that it would lock up my CPU for a minute
or more with the latest version. Just viewing and deleting the John
Lothian newsletter was painfully slow. AVG had to go. I read all the
current reviews and I was tempted to go back to Norton because this
year's version is supposedly lean and mean. But I just don't trust
Norton given their recent history. I may go back to them sometime but
not yet.
I'm currently demoing VIPRE and I'm impressed. It runs with a very small
footprint and my computer is running much faster. It combines antivirus
and antispyware in a single program and that's a plus. My first scan was
a quick scan that only took a few minutes. It found a low-risk adware
program that Realplayer had installed ages ago -- 55 instances of the
dang thing in my registry. AVG, Spybot S&D and Ad-aware had all missed
it. Then I ran a full scan, which took about 3 hours, and it didn't find
anything else. A full scan in AVG took about 12 hours and it didn't have
any quick scan option so I seldom scanned my system. I'll be buying a
VIPRE license (cheap) when the demo period is up.
