ETFs (exchange traded funds) are a pretty good proxy for sector data.
The S&P Select Sector SPDRs divide the S&P 500 into 9 broad sectors or
there are others that divide the market up into smaller groups. The only
problem is most of the ETFs are only a few years old; the SPDRs only go
back to 1999. You can look up symbols at http://www.amex.com/ and get
data from any source of Amex stock data such as my favorite free one
http://finance.yahoo.com/ .
