That looks like a good process to avoid headaches during registry disasters. 

I have to say, though, that my system runs much better after reverting to a 
pristine registry.  The entire recovery process, from "WTF just happened?" to 
"Why won't it boot?" to "Uh-oh, I think the registry is hosed..." to "OK, guess I 
have to revert to an old registry backup" to "Most applications are reinstalled 
and working properly again" only took a little over a day.  If I'd had this 
backup process in place I'd have been back on the air within an hour, but my 
system would have been right back at its funky-behavior state.

It's fairly scary to realize how messed up the registry had gotten in less than 
9 months after a clean install.  Just gotta love that rock-solid reliable 
Windows environment.  NOT.
