I have used the synergy setup and it works great. But in order to secure
your system from someone gaining access as client you need to go thru a
whole bunch of hoops of which I was not willing to spend the time to do.
Thats why I settled for a hardware solution.

It doesn't help to share the monitors, but here's an option you may not
have considered for sharing keyboard/mouse:

http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

Synergy lets you share keyboard/mouse among multiple PCs, each of which
has its own monitor. The kbd/mouse are hooked into one PC, and the
software handles moving the control from one system to another. It's
very cool, just drag the mouse from one monitor to another and suddenly
you're talking to a different PC. And it's free.
