The only way I know of to backup data while the GS is running is using
XP Pro/Home(if loaded off CD) Backup with Shadow copy enabled.  Works
great.  Never had a problem.  Oh you do have to enable system password
and actually have a password.  For some reason it doesn't run if you
don't.  At least it didn't on SP1.

If I take a backup while GS is running would it be of any use later? 
Would the database be in a consistent state if I try to restore it? Or 
would it at least be able to make itself consistent (something like what 
happens when a crashed GS is restarted, maybe?)

Also, what about if GS is running in online mode vs. offline mode?
