Depends on the router. I had a D-Link wireless router that had
trouble communicating with a D-Link wireless USB network card in the
same room! Needless to say, I returned all the equipment, and now
use physical ethernet cables in my home. No more wireless for me.
Hard wires are more secure too.

If you have a line of sight to the wireless router, you can
probably get a couple of hundred feet away with 802.11b (home-grade
wireless). Walls, vegentation, and other structures will attenuate
the signal and shorten the range. With other standards like the
faster and more expensive 802.11a (business-grade wireless, 5 GHz
and above) the range is even shorter, and has more difficulty
penetrating walls.
